NAYAGARH: (Report- Ramakrushna Rath): Hundreds of residents took to the streets in Nayagarh on Friday to demand the immediate establishment of a government medical college in the district.
The Nayagarh District Medical College Action Committee organised a massive rally led by convener Godabarish Sahoo. People from all political backgrounds and various blocks, including Nuagaon, Daspalla, Gania, and Ranpur, joined the march to support the cause.
The Action Committee warned that they would call for a district-wide shutdown (bandh) if the government does not act quickly.
Following the rally, the committee held a meeting at the Nilamadhab Kalyan Mandap. Members from various groups, including the Rotary Club, Senior Citizens Forum, and Bus Owners’ Association, attended the meeting. They discussed future plans to intensify their movement until the government fulfills their demands.

Key Demands and Protests
The protesters started their march from the Public Works Department (PWD) guest house and walked to the District Collector’s office. They shouted slogans against the state government, demanding an official announcement for the medical college.The Action Committee warned that they would call for a district-wide shutdown (bandh) if the government does not act quickly.
Why the Medical College is Needed
Community leaders highlighted several critical issues regarding the local healthcare system:- Poor Healthcare Infrastructure: Many existing hospitals in the district lack enough doctors and staff.
- Referral Centers: Local health centers often act only as "referral points," sending patients elsewhere instead of providing treatment.
- High Dependency: Residents from neighboring districts like Boudh, Ganjam, Khordha, and Cuttack also rely on Nayagarh for medical needs.
Official Response
During the protest, Additional District Collector Rozina Dash met the agitators and accepted a formal memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister.Following the rally, the committee held a meeting at the Nilamadhab Kalyan Mandap.
