Bhubaneswar: Odia playback singer Pranab Patnaik died at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar on Friday. He was 88 years old. Doctors treated him for health issues at the facility before his death. Patnaik worked as a singer in the Odia music industry for several decades.
Patnaik was born on January 20, 1938. His father, Lal Mohan Patnaik, previously served as the Speaker of the Odisha Legislative Assembly. Patnaik received his early formal music training from Guru Kunal Adinarayan. This training gave him a strong technical foundation in vocal music.
Patnaik started his career in the film industry in 1958. He sang his first playback song for the Odia film "Maa." Following this debut, he recorded music for more than 200 Odia films. He worked with major music directors across Odisha and other regions. Patnaik sang many different genres of music. He recorded Odissi, folk, devotional, semi-classical, traditional, Hindi, and ghazal songs.

He provided vocals for many films. Audiences heard his voice in movies like "Shree Lokanath," "Suryamukhi," "Sindura Bindu," "Sesa Srabana," "Chinha Achinha," and "Batighara." Patnaik also collaborated with many established singers. He shared recording studios and stages with Hemlata, Vani Jayaram, S. Janaki, and P. Susheela. He also sang with Nirmala Mishra, Bhupinder Singh, Usha Mangeshkar, and Haimanti Sukla.
Various organisations gave Patnaik awards for his work. He holds the record of winning the State Film Award for Best Playback Singer seven times. He earned these awards for films such as "Sindura Bindu" in 1976 and "Astaraaga" in 1982. He also won the award for "Jhiati Sita Pari" in 1983, "Kanyadana" in 1988, "Pratishodha Aparadha Nuhen" in 1989, and "Asha" in 1993.
Patnaik also won the Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for 1997-1998. He received the Big Odia Entertainment Award in 2010 and the Prafulla Kar Samman in 2011. Committees awarded him the Jayadev Puraskar in 2016 and the Gangadhar Rath Memorial Award in 2017. In 2023, he received the Balakrishna Dash Memorial Award. These awards recognized his long period of work in the music industry.
