Baghuni Odia Film Makes History at Cannes 2025 – First Multi-National Co-Production

This groundbreaking moment not only shines a spotlight on Odisha’s rich cultural tapestry but also heralds a new era for regional cinema on the world’s most prestigious cinematic platform. The grand reveal took place at the Bharat Pavilion, an initiative by the Government of India at the Marché du Film (Film Market), marking a significant step in Odisha’s growing influence in global cinema.

A Landmark Achievement for Odia Cinema

Baghuni is not just another regional film—it represents a major leap forward for Odia storytelling. Directed by internationally acclaimed filmmaker Jitendra Mishra, the film is a groundbreaking multi-national co-production, bringing together some of the biggest names in cinema. The project is a collaboration between:
  • National Film Development Corporation of India (NFDC)
  • Glocal Films UK Limited (founded by Odisha-born, London-based producer Partha Panda)
  • Jitendra Mishra’s Cinema4Good Pvt. Ltd.
This partnership is especially significant because it marks NFDC’s return to Odisha after 23 years without any major cinematic ventures.

Breaking Barriers: A First for Odisha

Baghuni is set to make history in several ways:
  • First Odia feature film with a multi-national co-production (primarily India-UK, with associations from Poland, Germany, Italy, Czech Republic, and the USA).
  • First Odia film to receive such large-scale support from NFDC.
  • First Odia film to be officially showcased at Cannes as part of India’s pavilion.
The film’s presence at Cannes is expected to open doors for more regional Indian films on the global stage.

A Story with Global Appeal

While Baghuni is rooted in Odia culture, its themes are universal. The film is described as a "local story for a global audience" and will be released in multiple languages across several countries.
Director Jitendra Mishra expressed his excitement, saying:
"This film is not just about entertainment; it carries deep cultural and emotional significance. We hope it inspires audiences worldwide and proves that regional stories can have a universal impact."

A Star-Studded Team

The film boasts an impressive lineup of national and international cast and crew, though specific names are yet to be revealed. The involvement of UK-based Odia producer Partha Panda ensures a blend of local authenticity and global production standards.

What’s Next?

With the motion poster now unveiled, the team is gearing up to begin shooting soon. The film is expected to release in 2026, and its journey at Cannes has already generated significant buzz.

Baghuni is more than just a film—it’s a cultural movement. Its recognition at Cannes is a proud moment not just for Odisha but for all of India. As the world takes notice, Baghuni is set to redefine Odia cinema and inspire future filmmakers to dream bigger.
