TITILAGARH, (Tirthankar Patel): Police in Titilagarh arrested a 40-year-old man on Saturday for allegedly trafficking his wife to Dubai and marrying another woman. Authorities rescued the woman and brought her back to her native village seven years after the accused left her with a family in Mumbai.
The accused, Prem Mahanand, is a resident of Jagua village under the Titilagarh block. He married Hasta Mahanand several years ago. Following their marriage, the couple traveled to Mumbai to work as daily-wage laborers. They have three daughters together. Before returning to Mumbai for work a second time, the couple left their three children with their elderly grandparents in the village.
According to the official complaint, Prem Mahanand handed his wife over to a family in Mumbai for financial gain and returned to his village alone. The Mumbai-based family later relocated to Dubai and took Hasta Mahanand with them. Meanwhile, Prem Mahanand concealed these events from his relatives and married a second woman in his home village.
The incident came to public attention recently after Hasta Mahanand recorded and released a video message requesting assistance to return to India. After viewing the video and confirming her disappearance, her elderly parents filed a written complaint at the local police station and sought intervention from administrative officials.
The subsequent rescue operation involved coordination across multiple authorities. The Sub-Collector and District Superintendent of Police (SP) Abhilash G initiated formal inquiries into the disappearance. The Odisha State Government contacted the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to manage the international repatriation process. A local social worker filed a formal petition in the High Court to expedite the rescue and legal procedures. Through the support of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, officials safely brought the woman back to India.
Social worker Ranju Raimon shared the details of the rescue operation during a press conference. Following the woman's return, Titilagarh police arrested Prem Mahanand and forwarded him to the court on Saturday. Police officials confirmed that further investigation into the incident remains underway.
