Odisha on High Alert: Fire & Rescue Teams Deployed for Heavy Rains

Director General (DG) Dr. Sudhanshu Sarangi gave strict instructions to the entire team. He wants everyone to stay fully prepared for any crisis. Following his orders, Inspector General (IG) Dr. Umashankar Dash held a special meeting yesterday. He carefully checked all deployment plans. He made sure that every team is ready for immediate action.
The department divided the rescue teams into three main zones. These include the Central Range in Cuttack, the Southern Range in Berhampur, and the Northern Range in Sambalpur. Firefighters in all three zones are active and waiting for orders. They will provide quick help during any emergency.
The rescue teams have excellent water rescue equipment. They keep 324 rubber boats with motors ready across the state. The Central Range has 159 boats. The Southern Range has 84 boats. The Northern Range has 81 boats. The department also prepared 3,143 life jackets and 2,712 lifebuoys. These items will keep people safe in deep water. For underwater rescue, the teams carry 145 underwater breathing sets and 161 surface breathing sets.
Heavy rain often floods roads and low-lying areas. To solve this problem, the department deployed 952 water pumps. The teams will use these pumps to clear floodwater quickly. The pump list includes 51 high-capacity pumps, 477 trailer pumps, 409 portable pumps, and 15 floating pumps.
Strong winds and heavy rain can break trees and damage buildings. The rescue teams must clear the blocked roads fast. They carry 1,551 mechanical chainsaws and 17 electric power saws. They also have 136 hydraulic rescue tools, 17 concrete cutters, and 102 bolt cutters. These tools will help them cut through debris and clear paths easily.
Emergencies can happen in the dark. Therefore, the department arranged 628 tower lights and 173 searchlights to help teams work at night.
Finally, the department issued a safety request to all citizens. People must listen to official weather reports. They should avoid visiting waterlogged areas. If anyone needs emergency help, they should call their local fire station. They can also dial the central emergency helpline number, 112, for immediate assistance. The state government wants everyone to stay safe during this rainy season.
