Niali / Kataka, (Report - Rupashree Swetapadma Mohanty): A beautiful tradition took place today in the state of Odisha. The people of Niali town sent special gifts to the famous Jagannath Temple in Puri. These gifts come from the ancient Madhava Temple. The local people consider this temple the maternal uncle's home of Lord Jagannath. In their local culture, family members always send love and care when someone falls sick. Today, the temple priests followed this old custom. They packed natural medicines and sent them on a holy journey to Puri.

Right now, the main temple in Puri keeps its doors closed to the public. A few days ago, the three main deities took a grand ceremonial bath. These deities are Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra. According to local beliefs, this long outdoor bath gives them a symbolic fever. Because of this fever, the deities need complete rest. They stay in a private room for fifteen days. Special caretakers look after them during this time. Regular visitors cannot see the deities until they recover completely.
The maternal uncle's home wants the deities to get well soon. Because of this, they send a special package full of natural cures. This year, the package includes many helpful items. The priests packed rare roots and fresh medicinal herbs. They also added sweet-smelling herbal oils to help the deities relax. The caretakers will use these items to treat the fever. The package also contains fresh seasonal fruits, holy basil leaves, and bright flowers. All these natural items help the deities heal quickly.
The journey of these gifts started with great joy and devotion. Temple workers and priests led the way. They blew conch shells and beat traditional drums. The loud music filled the air with positive energy. Many local people joined the walk. They sang happy songs and chanted names of the deities. To show their deep respect, the people walked on the roads without wearing any shoes. The entire town of Niali looked bright and colorful as the large group moved forward. Everyone felt happy to help their beloved deities.
Since the doors of the main Puri temple remain shut, visitors go to a different place. Thousands of people now travel to the town of Brahmagiri. They visit the famous Alarnath Temple there. Old traditions say that visiting this temple during these fifteen days brings great blessings. The people believe they receive the same joy as seeing Lord Jagannath in Puri. Therefore, the town of Brahmagiri stays very busy during this special resting period.

Once the deities feel better, they will come out of their private room. They will then get ready for the grand chariot festival, known as the Rath Yatra. Millions of people eagerly wait for that big day. Until then, the love and care from the maternal uncle's home keep this beautiful tradition alive.
