Every year, millions of people travel to the coastal city of Puri. They gather to watch the world-famous Rath Yatra. During this grand festival, devotees pull massive wooden chariots through the streets. This year, the main event will take place on July 16. Handling such a massive crowd requires careful planning and strict management. To ensure a safe and smooth experience for everyone, the Odisha Police is making extensive preparations.
Puri Rath Yatra: New Parking & Crowd Control Rules You Need to Know

Director General of Police (DGP) Yogesh Bahadur Khurania recently led a high-level review meeting. He held this meeting at the police headquarters in Cuttack. The DGP instructed all senior officers to work together closely. He asked them to monitor every small detail from the ground level up. The police want to ensure the festival runs perfectly without any errors.

Smart Traffic and Crowd Control

The police have introduced several new measures to manage the huge crowds. They have identified eight new parking areas on the edges of the city. These new spots will keep heavy traffic out of the main town. Furthermore, special police teams will walk right in front of the chariots to clear the path safely.
Authorities will also deploy special "crack teams" in heavily crowded spots. These teams will take quick action if any problems arise. The city will get extra CCTV cameras, road dividers, and special traffic zones to guide the public.
To prevent crime, the DGP ordered regular checks in all local hotels and lodges. Police will collect photos of known criminals from other states. They will display these photos on large LED screens at railway stations and bus stands. This step will help both the public and security officers stay alert. Additionally, the police will increase their patrols along the sea beach and build temporary outposts on the sand to protect tourists.

Aligning Security with Key Festival Dates

The administration is matching its security plans with the temple's major ritual dates:
  • June 29: The events begin with the Deva Snana Purnima.
  • July 14: Devotees will attend the Naba Joubana Darshan.
  • July 16: The main Rath Yatra chariot pulling begins.
  • July 20: The special Hera Panchami rituals take place.
  • July 23 & 24: Sandhya Darshan happens first, followed by the return journey known as Bahuda Yatra.
  • July 25 to 27: The festival concludes with the beautiful Suna Besha, Adhara Pana, and finally, the Niladri Bije.

Coordinated Defense Across the State

Security goes beyond the temple town. The Government Railway Police (GRP) will work directly with the Railway Protection Force (RPF). Together, they will secure the busy railway stations in Puri, Bhubaneswar, Khurda Road, and Jatni.
Near the temple, the police will set up special barricades and park 'Rakshak' rescue vehicles. They will bring in K-9 sniffer dogs and highly trained security forces to stand guard. The police and the district administration have created a detailed master plan to prevent any crowd stampedes.
Many top police officers attended this important meeting, both in person and online. They shared local reports and finalized the security blueprint. The Rath Yatra is a beautiful time of joy and devotion. With these careful measures, the Odisha Police aims to give devotees a safe, peaceful, and memorable experience.
