Odisha Law & Order Crisis: BJD Demands Action on Rising Crime

Press Conference Details

BJD Vice President Sanjay Das Burma and Biju Mahila Janata Dal President Snehangini Chhuria led the press conference. They strongly criticized the current state government. They claimed that the Home Department has failed to maintain peace and security. Das Burma mentioned that the government focuses on making political statements to protect its image instead of stopping crime.

Specific Incidents Highlighted

The BJD leaders highlighted several recent incidents to support their claims:
  • Dhenkanal Incident: They mentioned a severe attack on a woman in the Dhenkanal district. The victim is currently receiving care in a hospital intensive care unit in Cuttack. Das Burma noted that the local police have not yet arrested the main suspects, despite repeated requests from the BJD.
  • Hinjili Incident: The leaders brought up a tragic event in the Hinjili area. Attackers killed a pregnant woman in broad daylight in front of her young daughter. BJD leaders pointed out that the police failed to provide security for the woman, even though she had asked them for help earlier.
  • Kanas Incident: Das Burma discussed a violent attack in the Kanas area. A group of individuals severely assaulted a local man named Mrutyunjay Bharimal. He sustained major injuries and is currently receiving urgent medical treatment at AIIMS. The police have not yet caught the primary attackers in this case.

The Balianta Case

The BJD leaders placed special focus on a recent incident near the Balianta Ramchandrapur bridge. A group attacked and killed a young man named Soumya Swain. Das Burma stated that this attack happened while police officers were present. He expressed disappointment over a recent statement made by a senior railway police official, who claimed the victim had a criminal background. The BJD leaders requested the Director General of Police to withdraw that specific statement immediately.

Criticism of Authorities

Snehangini Chhuria also shared her views during the meeting. She stated that criminals no longer fear the police force. She expressed deep concern for the safety of women across the state. She criticized the state Women's Commission, claiming the commission ignores major issues but acts only for show in the Balianta case to protect the police.

Final Warning

The BJD leaders issued a clear warning to the state government. They demanded immediate and strict action to stop the rising crime rates and protect citizens. The BJD warned that they will organize massive public protests on the streets if the government does not improve the situation soon.
