SITAPUR, GAJAPATI: A historic water body in the Gajapati district is finally getting a much-needed makeover. The famous "Dharma Kunda" pond is located in Sitapur village. Many years ago, Maharaja Krushna Chandra Gajapati built this large pond to help local farmers. However, it lost its glory over time. Now, local Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Engineer Rupesh Panigrahi has taken charge to restore this vital water source.
Dharma Kunda Restoration: MLA Rupesh Panigrahi Revives Historic Gajapati Pond

For a very long time, authorities ignored the maintenance of the Dharma Kunda pond. Because of this neglect, the pond became shallow. Its ability to hold water decreased significantly. Farmers struggled to get enough water for their crops during dry seasons. The local ecosystem also suffered. The villagers badly needed someone to fix this historic pond.
Recently, MLA Rupesh Panigrahi visited the Dharma Kunda site in Sitapur. He wanted to see the exact condition of the pond. During his visit, he met with the local villagers. He listened to their daily struggles and their hopes for the project. After speaking with the residents, the MLA held a meeting with the concerned department officials. He gave strict instructions to the officers. He told them to speed up the restoration work without any further delay.
The state government has already approved funds for this important project. The government sanctioned four lakh rupees under the "Ama Odisha, Vikashit Odisha" scheme. This financial support belongs to the 2024-2025 financial year. MLA Panigrahi promised to provide all necessary help to complete the work smoothly. His active involvement has brought new hope to the villagers.
Once the workers finish the restoration, the pond will bring massive benefits to local agriculture. The deep pond will capture and store rainwater effectively. It will provide proper irrigation facilities to the nearby farmlands. According to reports, the project will directly water more than 500 acres of agricultural land. Farmers will grow their crops easily, even when the rainfall is low. This steady water supply will definitely increase their annual harvest.
The benefits of the Dharma Kunda restoration go beyond just farming. The local administration plans to start fish farming in the deep, clean water. This activity will create new jobs for the youth. Additionally, workers will plant many trees around the pond. These green trees will protect the environment and stop soil erosion. Together, the fish farming and the new greenery will generate a good income. This extra money will directly increase the revenue of the local village panchayat.
Both the MLA and the local farmers are very happy about this progress. They believe the restored Dharma Kunda will change the future of Sitapur village. By saving a historical landmark, the community is also securing its economic future. The prompt action by MLA Rupesh Panigrahi shows a strong commitment to rural development. The people of Gajapati district now look forward to seeing their historic pond full of water once again.
