Kandhamal: (Report- Akulanda Digal): While the state government spends millions on new infrastructure, a prime piece of government property in Tikabali is rotting away. The old Revenue Inspector (RI) office, located in the heart of the town near Durga Mandap, has turned into a massive garbage dump due to years of official neglect.

A Den of Decay

The building sits in a busy market area, but it is now completely abandoned. Because there is no maintenance, the premises are covered in piles of plastic waste, discarded plates, and filth. The area has become a haunt for anti-social elements and is often used as an open urinal.
The structural integrity of the building is also failing. Cracks have appeared in the walls, and wild bushes have overtaken the structure, making it look like a "haunted house" in the middle of a bustling market.

Impact on the Community

Local residents and shopkeepers are the worst hit. The constant stench from the accumulating waste is making life difficult for those nearby. Since the building is close to the sensitive Durga Mandap area, the lack of hygiene is a growing concern for the public.

Intellectuals and local leaders expressed their anger over the situation. They argue that the building was constructed using taxpayer money and should not be left to crumble.
Community suggestions for the building include:
  • Converting it into a public library.
  • Renovating it for use by another government department.
  • Turning it into a community center.

Call for Action

The people of Tikabali are now demanding immediate action from the Revenue Department and the district administration. They want the premises cleaned and the building restored for public use before it becomes completely unsalvageable.
Whether the administration will step in to save this asset or let it turn to dust remains to be seen.
