NAYAGARH: (Report- Ramakrushna Rath): Life in Nayagarh town came to a standstill today as a 12-hour general strike (bandh) saw overwhelming support from local citizens. The protest, organized by the Nayagarh Foundation and local activists, aimed to push for a government medical college in the district headquarters.
The shutdown began at 6:00 AM and lasted until 6:00 PM. Throughout the day, shops remained closed, and business establishments stayed shut as traders voluntarily joined the movement. This mass participation highlighted the growing public demand for better healthcare infrastructure in the region.
For years, the people of Nayagarh have campaigned for a full-fledged Allopathic (Medical) College. Protesters stated that while they welcome the homeopathic institution, the demand for a general medical college remains their top priority. They believe a medical college is essential for providing advanced healthcare services to the district’s growing population.
Sheikh Abdul Ahad, the founder of the Nayagarh Foundation, addressed the crowd. He warned that if the government ignores this long-standing demand, the agitation will intensify in the coming months. He also thanked the business community, journalists, and volunteers for making the 12-hour strike a success.
