Bhubaneswar: The Odia film industry, fondly known as Ollywood, is in mourning today. Renowned music director Abhijit Majumdar passed away on Sunday morning at AIIMS Bhubaneswar. He was 54 years old. Mr. Majumdar had been battling a serious liver ailment for a long time. His sudden departure has left a massive void in the world of Odia and Sambalpuri music.

A Brave Fight for Health

Abhijit Majumdar was undergoing treatment for liver cirrhosis. His health journey over the last few months was a difficult one. In September last year, doctors admitted him to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in a critical condition. After several weeks of intense care, he showed signs of recovery and moved to a general ward in October.
He had recently returned home after his condition improved. However, his health took a sharp turn for the worse yesterday. His family rushed him back to the hospital, but he breathed his last early this morning.

From the Classroom to the Recording Studio

Abhijit’s journey into the world of music is truly inspiring. Born on September 11, 1971, he initially chose a career in education. He worked as a college lecturer for a brief period. However, his passion for music was too strong to ignore. In 1996, he made a bold decision. He resigned from his stable teaching job and moved to Cuttack to pursue his dreams in the music industry.
He began his career with Sambalpuri folk music. His unique style and catchy tunes quickly grabbed everyone's attention. In the year 2000, he made his grand entry into the Odia film industry with the movie Kashia Kapila. This debut marked the start of a legendary career.

A Legacy of Hits

Over the last two decades, Abhijit Majumdar became a household name. He composed music for more than 60 films and over 100 music albums. He was not just a composer but also a talented singer. Some of his most famous songs include:

His song "Rati Sara Bar Light Duku Duku" remains an all-time favorite at celebrations across Odisha. His work earned him high honors, including State Film Awards in 2010 for the film Tu Tha Mu Jauchhi Rushi and again in 2022 for the film Trushna.

Abhijit Majumdar was known for his energetic personality and his ability to connect with the youth through his music. Fans and fellow artists describe him as a powerhouse of talent who redefined modern Odia film music. Although he is no longer with us, his melodies will continue to echo in the hearts of millions of Odia music lovers.
