36th Konark Festival 2025: Dance, Sand Art & CM Inauguration

KONARK, ODISHA
– Chief Minister Shri Mohan Charan Majhi officially inaugurated the 36th World Famous Konark Festival and the 15th International Sand Art Festival today. The twin events, set against the magnificent backdrop of the UNESCO World Heritage Konark Sun Temple and the scenic Chandrabhaga Beach, have once again drawn art lovers and tourists from across India and the globe.

​The Chief Minister highlighted the festival’s significance, calling the Konark Festival a shining symbol of Odisha’s cultural identity. He emphasized that the event plays a crucial role in showcasing not just Odisha's art forms but also its complete culture to the world stage.
​This year's Konark Festival presents a rich tapestry of India's classical dances. Artists from various states will perform Odissi, along with Bharatanatyam, Kathakali, Manipuri, and Kathak, creating a diverse and vibrant cultural spectacle under the stars.

​A Celebration of Global and Local Artistry

​Speaking at the joint inauguration, Chief Minister Majhi expressed his delight at attending both the 15th International Sand Art Festival and the 36th Konark Festival. He noted the exceptional quality of the sand art creations at Chandrabhaga Beach, crafted by world-class artists.

​"The incredible sand artworks created by international artists on Chandrabhaga Beach captivate the eyes," he stated. Artists from countries like Japan, Spain, and Russia, alongside skilled practitioners from various Indian states, participate in the event. Their presence significantly elevates Odisha's position on the global tourism map.

​The Chief Minister described the performances at the Sun Temple as an unforgettable experience. He praised the sweet harmony of Odissi and other classical dances presented by the nation's best artists against the grand temple structure.

​Boosting Tourism and Empowering Women

​The Konark Festival is more than a display of art; it is a vital contributor to the local economy. Majhi pointed out that the festival helps strengthen the economy by increasing the number of tourists visiting the Golden Triangle of Konark-Puri-Bhubaneswar. This surge in visitors, in turn, provides livelihoods for local residents.

​A key highlight of the event is the focus on women's empowerment. The Chief Minister expressed how deeply impressed he was by the power and capability of women displayed at the associated fair. Members of Women's Self-Help Groups (SHGs) from different districts of Odisha have set up stalls to exhibit their handicrafts and organic products.
These demonstrations offer a living experience of the rich Odia heritage and craftsmanship.
​Majhi strongly believes that this fair will enable women entrepreneurs to establish valuable market connections and successfully increase their income.

​A Vision for a Developed Odisha

​The Chief Minister reaffirmed his government’s commitment to women’s progress. "Our government aims for the women of Odisha to become a symbol of development, making women's empowerment an exemplary shine for the world," he declared.
​He framed the success of the women entrepreneurs as a significant milestone toward achieving Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi's vision of 'Lakhpati Didi' (Millionaire Sisters). Shri Majhi concluded by expressing his hope that women's empowerment will form the foundation for a Developed Odisha by 2036 and a Developed India by 2047.
