Bhubaneswar, July 1, 2025: Within 24 hours, Odisha BJP suspended 5 over BMC attack. The committe suspend five members for their alleged involvement in a violent attack on a Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) officer earlier this week. 
The swift suspension follows disturbing allegations that party workers physically assaulted a BMC official during a public grievance redressal meeting at the corporation's office on Monday, June 30. Shocking video footage, widely circulated on social media, appears to show individuals dragging the officer out of his office and subjecting him to physical abuse.
State BJP President, Manmohan Samal, confirmed the suspension. "Acting on the serious allegations of misconduct, the party has suspended these five individuals from primary membership with immediate effect," Samal stated. The suspended members are:
1. Aparup Narayan Raut alias Jiban Raut (Corporator)
2. Rashmi Ranjan Mahapatra
3. Debashish Pradhan
4. Sachikant Swain
5. Sanjib Mishra

The footage depicts a chaotic scene where the official is forcibly pulled from his chair, dragged through the office corridors, and assaulted.
Police have already acted on the victim's complaint. Authorities arrested Jiban Raut, Rashmi Ranjan Mahapatra, and Debashish Pradhan late Monday in connection with the attack case. Investigations into the roles of Sachikant Swain and Sanjib Mishra are ongoing. Bhubaneswar Mayor Sulochana Das strongly condemned the violence and demanded the arrest of all individuals involved.
Hundreds staged a significant protest on Monday evening, blocking a major busy road in Bhubaneswar for several hours. They denounced the "hooliganism" within the BMC premises and demanded stringent action against the perpetrators. The protest caused significant traffic disruptions, underlining the intensity of the civic body's reaction.
The BJP's suspension move is seen as an attempt to distance the party from the alleged actions of these members and contain the political fallout. The incident has cast a shadow over civic administration and raised serious concerns about the safety of public officials performing their duties. The police investigation continues, with the suspended members facing both party disciplinary action and potential criminal charges. The BMC employees' union has vowed to continue pressing for justice for their assaulted colleague.
