The victims have been identified as Shubham Khilar (12), son of Kalu Khilar from Podasahi village under Odagaon police station; Ritesh Pradhan (11), son of Pradeep Pradhan from Khalmada village under Nuagaon police station; and Umakant Nayak (10), son of Vijay Nayak from Godibida village under Daspalla police station. The trio had cycled to the pond near Godibida village to take a bath, likely as part of the festive celebrations of a nearby wedding. However, while bathing, they accidentally drowned under unclear circumstances.
When the children did not return home on time, worried family members began searching for them. Their bicycles were found near the pond, raising suspicions. Upon realizing the possibility of drowning, locals immediately alerted the fire brigade. Rescue teams rushed to the spot and retrieved the bodies from the water. The boys were then taken to the Daspalla Community Health Center, where doctors declared them dead upon arrival.
The news of the tragedy sent waves of sorrow across the village and the hospital. Grieving relatives and villagers gathered, struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss. Meanwhile, the Daspalla police registered an unnatural death case (UDR No. 8/25) and initiated an investigation. The bodies were later handed over to the families after post-mortem examinations.
This devastating incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by unsupervised water bodies, especially for children. Authorities have urged parents and guardians to exercise caution and ensure children are accompanied near ponds, rivers, or other water sources. The entire region mourns the loss of these young lives, and the families have been left in inconsolable grief.
