Kataka, July 4 (Rupashree Swetapadma Mohanty): Nestled between the Mahanadi and Kathajodi rivers, Kataka beats as the heart of Odisha. As the historic 'Millennium City' marks 150 years of civic administration this month, it stands as a living testament to resilience, community spirit, and cultural heritage. 
In 1876, the British laid the foundation for Cuttack Municipality, ushering in organised civic life. From the narrow lanes near Barabati Fort to the vibrant banks of Bali Jatra, the city has carried forward the legacy of warriors, artisans, and traders. Today, the Kataka Municipal Corporation (CMC) celebrates 150 years built by generations of its people.
On July 8, Saheed Bhawan will host the grand inauguration. CMC will felicitate former chairpersons, mayors, deputy mayors, and commissioners who shaped the city.
On July 14, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi will inaugurate the state’s largest modern Biswanath Pandit Library and unveil a commemorative 150-year logo.

Year-long celebrations begin
CMC has unveiled a year-long program blending remembrance with development.On July 8, Saheed Bhawan will host the grand inauguration. CMC will felicitate former chairpersons, mayors, deputy mayors, and commissioners who shaped the city.
On July 14, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi will inaugurate the state’s largest modern Biswanath Pandit Library and unveil a commemorative 150-year logo.
Development And Green Initiatives
CMC announced major infrastructure projects. It will convert the old BSW drain into a modern box drain at a cost of Rs 550 crore. The corporation will also lie foundation stones for a Rs 10 crore animal shelter and Rs 6 crore upgrades to Satichaura and Telugu crematoriums.
For a greener future, CMC will plant one lakh trees across all wards.
The city will redesign five parks dedicated to art and literature, IT and science, tribal heritage, senior citizens, and freedom fighters. Two permanent stone memorial gates will welcome visitors. A photo exhibition, documentary, souvenir and special postal stamp will preserve the city’s memories.
From Tarikashi silver filigree that earned Cuttack its 'Silver City' name to the roar of Bali Jatra, the city draws strength from its people. As it steps into year 151, the resolve is clear: build a smarter, cleaner, and more compassionate Kataka that respects its past and embraces the future.

The jubilee includes ward-level festivals, interschool sports meets, a mini-marathon, and a children’s festival.
