Athagarh, July 18 (Rupashree Swetapadma Mohanty): Continuous heavy rain triggered by a low-pressure system has flooded several parts of Athagarh in Cuttack district. The situation worsened following a sharp rise in the Sapua River, inundating homes and farmland.
Acting on an urgent request from local MLA Ranendra Pratap Swain, the district administration launched rescue operations, relief distribution, and crop damage assessment.
Cuttack Collector Dattatraya Bhausaheb Shinde, IAS, led a high-level team to the worst-hit areas on Saturday. The team including Athagarh Sub-Collector Prahlad Narayan Sharma, IAS, Tehsildar Kunja Bihari Badajena, OAS, Block Development Officer Akash Kumar Panda, OAS-I, and other officials visited Tarding, Samasarpur, and Ichhapur panchayats.
Families stranded in waterlogged houses were evacuated to nearby cyclone shelters and schools. The administration distributed dry food items like flattened rice (chuda), jaggery, and biscuits to around 500 people and hot meals to over 150. Efforts are on to reach every affected household.
The Agriculture Department has started assessing crop loss. Initial reports peg 6,900 hectares of farmland under water across 15 gram panchayats of Athagarh block. Field visits are underway for a final report.
The district administration said the situation is being monitored round the clock. Rescue and relief work will be intensified further with public safety as top priority.
