Cuttack, 23/4/2026 (Rupashree Swetapadma Mohanty): A major fire broke out early this morning in Naraj Kaibarta Sahi under Baranga Police Station limits, completely destroying a two-room house belonging to local resident Devadatta Dalei. Fortunately, no loss of life was reported in the incident.
According to initial reports, a monkey jumped onto an electricity pole, triggering a short circuit that sparked the blaze. Within minutes, the fire spread rapidly through the house, reducing all furniture, clothing, and household belongings to ashes.
At the time of the incident, the house was occupied on rent by Kanchan Behera and her husband Chaturbhuj Behera, along with their two young daughters. Chaturbhuj Behera is a differently-abled person who earns a living through daily wage labour to support his family. Like every other day, he had stepped out for work this morning. On receiving news of the fire, he rushed back home only to find everything reduced to ashes.
Local residents immediately alerted the Baranga Fire Service. Fire personnel reached the spot promptly and, after nearly an hour of effort, managed to bring the fire under control.
The fire has left Kanchan Behera’s family completely destitute, now forced to live under the open sky. With a differently-abled husband and two minor daughters to care for, the family is facing severe hardship and uncertainty.
In light of the tragedy, local residents have urged the district administration to provide immediate government assistance to the affected family. They have appealed for shelter, food supplies, clothing, and financial relief to help the family recover from the loss. Police have registered the case and begun an investigation into the incident.
