Athagarh, April 17, 2026 (Rupashree Swetapadma Mohanty): While people have become increasingly aware about using toilets, residents of Radhagobindpur village under Athagarh Assembly constituency staged a protest on Thursday by blocking the main road from Radhagobindpur to Athagarh, alleging deprivation of toilet facilities.
According to villagers, despite repeated demands, toilets under the Swachh Bharat Mission have not been constructed in the village due to alleged negligence by Athagarh MLA Shri Ranendra Pratap Swain. As a result, women, elderly persons, and children are facing severe inconvenience. Though residents are now conscious and want to use toilets, lack of facilities is forcing them to defecate in the open.
Around 10 AM today, over a hundred villagers sat on the road near Radhagobindpur Chhak and staged a demonstration, halting vehicular movement for two hours. On receiving information, Athagarh police reached the spot and pacified the agitated locals. The road blockade was lifted at 12 noon after police assured them that the administration would be consulted to resolve the issue.
Villagers have warned that if steps for toilet construction are not initiated within seven days, they will launch another agitation.
