CUTTACK: A devastating fire broke out late last night at the Sriram Chandra Bhanja (SCB) Medical College and Hospital, leading to a tragic loss of life and multiple injuries. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi visited the site today to assess the situation and meet with the victims' families.
Hospital employees and relatives acted bravely to rescue patients from the upper floor. During these rescue efforts, several staff members sustained injuries. Five fire engines arrived promptly at the scene and managed to bring the flames under control.

The Chief Minister emphasized that patient safety is a top priority. He has instructed hospital authorities to remain vigilant and ensure all emergency protocols are up to date. Currently, the rescued patients have been moved to safe wards where they are receiving continuous monitoring from senior doctors.
Details of the Incident
The fire started around 3:00 AM in the Trauma Care Center of the hospital. Thick smoke quickly filled the two-story building, causing panic among patients, their relatives, and hospital staff. The state government has confirmed that 10 people lost their lives in the tragedy. Another 13 individuals are currently receiving treatment for serious injuries. - Ex-gratia Payment: The government will provide ₹25 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased person.
- Medical Care: The state will ensure the best possible medical treatment for all injured survivors at no cost.
- Official Inquiry: A judicial probe has been ordered to identify the exact cause of the fire.
Safety Measures and Future Actions
Preliminary reports suggest that an electrical short circuit might have triggered the fire.
