ODAGAON: A significant environmental initiative is taking root in the Nayagarh district of Odisha. Following a public grievance hearing held in Odagaon last Monday, local activists and citizens have successfully pushed for a district-wide awareness campaign against the harmful practice of stubble burning.
In a quick response to this appeal, the District Agriculture Officer has integrated a vital message into the ongoing Krushi Rath (Agriculture Chariot) tour. Instead of burning straw, the campaign now actively encourages farmers to convert agricultural waste into organic manure. This shift not only protects the soil but also prevents air pollution.
"Stubble burning is a legal offense, similar to forest fires," says Sukanta Kumar Chaudhary.
The campaign emphasizes three main pillars:
The message remains clear: protecting the environment and society is a shared responsibility. With the active support of the administration and the media, the district is moving toward a future where "everyone survives and everyone prospers."
Community Action for Environmental Change
The movement began when a delegation, led by noted environmental enthusiast Sukanta Kumar Chaudhary, submitted a formal memorandum to the District Collector. The petition highlighted urgent environmental and social issues affecting the people of Nayagarh. The primary focus was the dangerous trend of farmers burning crop residue (straw) after harvests. In a quick response to this appeal, the District Agriculture Officer has integrated a vital message into the ongoing Krushi Rath (Agriculture Chariot) tour. A Call to the Media and Public
The organisers have expressed their deep gratitude to the district administration and department officials for their prompt cooperation. They are now calling upon media representatives to amplify this message."Stubble burning is a legal offense, similar to forest fires," says Sukanta Kumar Chaudhary.
The campaign emphasizes three main pillars:
- Awareness: Educating farmers on how to turn straw into wealth through composting.
- Legal Consequences: Reminding the public that stubble burning attracts strict legal penalties and fines.
- Strict Enforcement: The group has requested the district administration to take exemplary action against those who continue to violate environmental laws despite repeated warnings.
Future Outlook
The initiative aims for a "Live and Let Live" philosophy, focusing on the collective growth of the community and the protection of the ecosystem. The organizers hope that other government departments will also join this mission to ensure a cleaner, greener Nayagarh. The message remains clear: protecting the environment and society is a shared responsibility.
