A deep depression is rapidly intensifying and is on a direct path to cross the Andhra Pradesh coastline later this week as a severe cyclonic storm. The impending cyclone threatens to bring destructive winds and torrential rainfall across multiple states in southern and eastern India.

The weather system, currently positioned over the southeast Bay of Bengal, is demonstrating clear signs of organization. As of 11:30 AM IST today, the system lay centered approximately 770 km east-southeast of Chennai and 820 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam. Meteorologists are closely tracking its movement and development.

From Deep Depression to Severe Cyclonic Storm

The IMD forecasts a clear and concerning intensification path for this system. It is expected to transform into a full-fledged cyclonic storm within the next 12 hours. The storm will continue to gather strength over the warm waters of the southwest Bay of Bengal.
By the morning of October 28, it is likely to intensify into a Severe Cyclonic Storm. The system is then predicted to maintain a north-northwesterly track, setting its sights on the coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh.

Landfall Forecast and Expected Impact

The most critical update from the IMD pinpoints the likely landfall timing and location. The severe cyclonic storm is very likely to cross the coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, with the city of Kakinada near the center of the impact zone. This event is expected during the evening or night of October 28.
At the time of landfall, the cyclone is forecast to pack maximum sustained wind speeds of 90 to 100 kilometers per hour. These winds will likely generate gusts reaching up to 110 kmph. · Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam: This region will experience one of the longest periods of impact, with heavy rains expected from October 26 through 30.
· Telangana, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh: These states will see the arrival of heavy rainfall from October 27, persisting until October 30.

Separate System in The Arabian Sea

In a separate development, the IMD is also monitoring a depression over the east-central Arabian Sea. This system, located about 790 km southwest of Mumbai, is currently moving south-southwestwards. It is forecast to curve southeastwards over the next 24 hours. While this system is not an immediate land threat, it is being watched for any potential changes in intensity or direction.
