Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has approved a new public transport initiative called Mukhyamantri Bus Seva (MBS) to improve rural connectivity and make travel more affordable. Under this scheme, women, transgender individuals, students, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities will receive a 50% discount on bus fares. The decision was made during a state cabinet meeting on Wednesday, with the goal of providing safe, reliable, and efficient transportation across Odisha.

A Boost for Rural Transport  

The Mukhyamantri Bus Seva aims to strengthen rural transport networks by connecting key locations such as business centers, educational institutions, medical facilities, and other important destinations within and outside the state. The scheme is designed to ensure that people in remote areas have better access to essential services while keeping fares affordable.  
One of the major highlights of the program is the fare concession, which will be available for both AC and non-AC buses. Passengers eligible for the discount will need to use the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) to avail the benefit. This move is expected to encourage more people to use public transport, reducing dependency on private vehicles.  

Enhanced Safety and Technology Features 

To ensure passenger safety, especially for women and children, the buses will be equipped with advanced features such as:  
  • CCTV cameras for constant monitoring  
  • Live Vehicle Tracking (LVT) to monitor bus movements in real-time  
  • Panic buttons for emergencies  
  • Passenger Information Systems (PIS) to provide updates on routes and schedules  
  • Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) to improve road safety  
These measures are part of the government’s effort to make public transport more secure and user-friendly.  

Employment and Economic Growth  

Apart from improving connectivity, the scheme is expected to generate local employment opportunities. By expanding bus services, the government aims to create jobs in transportation, maintenance, and related sectors. Additionally, the initiative is likely to benefit small-scale industries by improving the movement of goods and workers across the state.  

Long-Term Plan 

The Mukhyamantri Bus Seva has been approved for operation until the financial year 2032-33, with the possibility of extension based on public demand and periodic reviews. The scheme will replace the previous government’s Location Accessible Multi-modal Initiative (LAccMI) but with improved efficiency and broader coverage.
