New Delhi: In a significant move to improve regional connectivity and support economic growth, the Civil Aviation Ministry has given initial approval for two new greenfield airports—one in Kota, Rajasthan, and another in Puri, Odisha. The decision, announced on Monday, is expected to enhance travel, tourism, and business activities in both regions. 
Known as India’s coaching capital, Kota attracts thousands of students every year preparing for competitive exams. The city also has a growing industrial sector, including cement, chemical, and power plants. Improved air connectivity is expected to support these industries while making travel more convenient for students and professionals.
Kota Airport: A Boost for Education and Industry
Kota, a major educational and industrial hub, is currently represented by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. The ministry highlighted that Birla’s consistent efforts played a key role in speeding up the approval process. Puri Airport: A Gateway for Pilgrims and Tourists
Puri, home to the famous Jagannath Temple, is one of India’s most visited pilgrimage sites. The new airport will significantly boost religious tourism, making it easier for devotees and travelers to access the coastal town. Currently, visitors often rely on Bhubaneswar’s airport, located about 60 kilometers away.The ministry stated that the Puri airport will also promote regional development by improving connectivity to other tourist destinations in Odisha, such as Konark and Chilika Lake. Better air links could further support the state’s economy by creating jobs and encouraging investments in hospitality and infrastructure.
India’s Expanding Aviation Sector
Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu emphasized that these projects align with the government’s goal to strengthen air travel infrastructure across the country. India, one of the fastest-growing aviation markets globally, now has over 150 operational airports. The addition of new airports in Kota and Puri reflects the increasing demand for domestic air travel, driven by rising incomes and tourism.Greenfield airports, built from scratch on undeveloped land, allow for modern facilities and better planning compared to expanding existing airports. The ministry will now work with state governments and private stakeholders to finalize land acquisition and construction plans.

While the approvals mark a crucial first step, the projects will require further clearances, including environmental assessments and financial agreements. If all goes as planned, the new airports could begin operations within the next few years, transforming regional connectivity in Rajasthan and Odisha.This development is part of a larger push to make air travel more accessible, especially in smaller cities, ensuring balanced economic growth across India. With improved infrastructure, both Kota and Puri are set to become key destinations for business, education, and tourism in the coming years.
