New Delhi: In a prestigious ceremony held at Lisbon City Hall, President Droupadi Murmu was conferred the ‘City Key of Honour’ by the Mayor of Lisbon, Portugal. The event highlighted the growing diplomatic and cultural ties between India and Portugal.
She noted that 2024 marks 50 years of diplomatic relations between India and Portugal, calling it a milestone in their partnership.

President Murmu expressed her gratitude to the Mayor and the people of Lisbon for the honor. She praised the city for its open-mindedness, rich culture, and welcoming spirit, emphasizing its values of tolerance and diversity.Strengthening Bilateral Relations
Later, President Murmu attended a grand banquet hosted by Portugal’s President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, at the historic Palacio da Ajuda. During her speech, she highlighted the deep-rooted cultural connections between the two nations, reflected in architecture, language, and cuisine.She noted that 2024 marks 50 years of diplomatic relations between India and Portugal, calling it a milestone in their partnership.

President Murmu emphasized India’s role as a knowledge-based economy, leveraging advancements in science, IT, and digital infrastructure.“We see Portugal as a key partner in fostering innovation and inclusive growth,” she added.
She also commended Portugal’s support in strengthening India’s relations with the European Union (EU) and expressed optimism that bilateral cooperation would expand further, benefiting both nations and the global community.
