BJD Faces Internal Turmoil Over U-Turn on Waqf Bill; Naveen Patnaik Holds Crisis Meet

Bhubaneswar: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) is grappling with intense internal discord following its sudden reversal of stance on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 in the Rajya Sabha. Senior party leaders rushed to a closed-door meeting with BJD president and former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik at his residence on Tuesday in a bid to resolve the escalating crisis.
BJD Faces Internal Turmoil Over U-Turn on Waqf Bill; Naveen Patnaik Holds Crisis Meet

Leadership Divided Over Waqf Bill Controversy

Sources reveal that the meeting focused on addressing growing dissent within the party after BJD MPs were allowed a "conscience vote" on the contentious Waqf Bill—a move that contradicted the party’s initial position. However, senior leaders publicly denied discussing the issue, insisting the talks were limited to organizational elections.
“We discussed party elections, including the selection of district presidents and the party chief. Organizational matters cover all aspects,” said senior BJD MLA Arun Kumar Sahoo, indirectly hinting at broader discussions. He emphasized that the BJD is strong enough to handle any internal challenges.

Young Leaders Demand Discipline, Oppose Alliance Signals

In a parallel development, a group of young BJD leaders held a separate meeting, expressing concerns over the party’s recent actions. Reportedly, they submitted a letter to Naveen Patnaik, urging strict action against indiscipline and opposing any ambiguous support for national parties, which they claim demoralizes grassroots workers.
“Confusing signals weaken the party. We stand firmly with Naveen Patnaik to strengthen the BJD,” a source quoted the young leaders as saying. They are likely to meet Patnaik soon to present their demands.

Minority Leaders Demand Action Against Sasmit Patra

The rift deepened when BJD Rajya Sabha MP Sasmit Patra announced the party’s U-turn, voting in favor of the Waqf Bill—a decision that angered minority leaders. A delegation led by BJD MP Muzibulla Khan met Patnaik, demanding Patra’s suspension for defying the party line.
“Supporting the Waqf Bill goes against the party’s principles. Patra must face consequences,” a minority leader stated.

Pandian’s Role Under Scrutiny

The controversy has also brought V.K. Pandian, former bureaucrat and close aide to Naveen Patnaik, under scrutiny. Party insiders allege his influence led to the sudden shift in stance, sparking fierce debates among senior leaders.

What’s Next for BJD?

With the organizational elections underway, the BJD is at a crossroads. While the leadership tries to project unity, the internal strife over the Waqf Bill and alleged external alliances threatens to weaken the party’s cohesion.
As pressure mounts, Naveen Patnaik’s next move will be crucial in determining whether the BJD can quell the rebellion or face further disintegration.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing political crisis.

Why This Matters:

  • The BJD’s internal conflict could reshape Odisha’s political landscape.
  • The Waqf Bill controversy highlights growing factionalism within the party.
  • Naveen Patnaik’s leadership is being tested amid rising dissent.
