According to reports, Ahalya was outdoors when the lightning struck. Her family members immediately rushed to her aid and took her to the nearest medical facility, the Gania Community Health Center (CHC), for emergency treatment. However, as her condition worsened, doctors referred her to the Nayagarh District Headquarters Hospital for advanced medical care.
Lightning strikes are not uncommon in Odisha, especially during the Kalabaishakhi when thunderstorms are frequent. However, such incidents often result in severe injuries or fatalities due to the high voltage and sudden impact. Authorities have repeatedly advised people to take precautions during storms, such as avoiding open fields, tall trees, and metal objects that can attract lightning. Unfortunately, in rural areas, where many work in agriculture, avoiding outdoor exposure during bad weather is not always possible.
Local officials have expressed concern over the increasing number of lightning-related accidents in the region. They have urged the state government to enhance early warning systems and install lightning arresters in vulnerable areas to minimize risks. Meanwhile, the community has come together to support Ahalya’s family, hoping for her speedy recovery.
This incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by natural disasters, even in seemingly ordinary weather conditions. As climate change leads to more extreme weather patterns, such events may become more frequent, necessitating greater public awareness and safety measures.
The doctors at Nayagarh District Hospital are closely monitoring Ahalya’s condition, but her prognosis remains uncertain. Further updates on her health are awaited as her family and villagers pray for her survival.
