BHUBANESWAR: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for four southern districts of Odisha for Wednesday, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall and strong winds as a deep depression approaches the eastern coastline. 
The weather system, which was situated approximately 150 km south of Gopalpur on Tuesday night, is moving west-northwestwards at a speed of 7 kmph. According to the IMD, the deep depression is projected to cross the North Andhra Pradesh and South Odisha coasts between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur, near Kalingapatnam, by Wednesday night.
Under the influence of this system, Kalahandi, Nabarangapur, Koraput, and Malkangiri districts are under a red warning. These areas are expected to receive extremely heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and surface winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 kmph.
The meteorological department has also issued an orange warning for six additional districts: Nuapada, Balangir, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam. These regions are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall alongside 50 to 60 kmph gusty winds and lightning.
Furthermore, a yellow warning is in effect for 16 districts, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Bargarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Subarnapur, Boudh, Puri, Khordha, and Nayagarh. The forecast for these areas includes isolated heavy rainfall and wind speeds of 40 to 50 kmph.
In response to the severe weather forecast, the IMD has issued safety advisories. Residents in the districts under the red warning have been instructed to avoid traveling through low-lying and vulnerable areas. Additionally, fishermen have been strictly advised against venturing into the sea off the South Odisha and North Andhra coasts until weather conditions stabilise.
