Cuttack, 3/08 (Report - Rupashree Swetapadma Mohanty): Police in Cuttack have started an investigation into a government urban health center after a resident received an incorrect blood test report. The laboratory report from the Choualiaganj Urban Community Health Centre (UCHC) incorrectly showed severe kidney failure. The patient later confirmed his normal kidney function through a second test at an accredited private diagnostic laboratory.
The complainant, Dr. Byomakesh Kanungo, visited the Choualiaganj UCHC for a routine health check and standard blood tests. The laboratory staff at the health center collected his blood samples and generated a diagnostic report. This initial report indicated that his kidneys were not functioning properly. The health center personnel then told him that his kidneys showed signs of severe damage.
Dr. Kanungo questioned the accuracy of the health center's laboratory report. He decided to verify the medical results before he started any treatment. He visited an accredited private laboratory in Cuttack and gave blood samples for the same kidney function tests. The private laboratory processed the tests and provided a new report. This second report showed normal test values and confirmed that his kidneys function well.
After he compared the two contradictory lab reports, Dr. Kanungo went to the Madhupatna Police Station on Sunday. He submitted a formal written complaint against the Choualiaganj UCHC management and its laboratory technicians. His complaint alleges medical negligence and careless laboratory administration. He requested a legal investigation into how the government facility produced an incorrect diagnostic report.
Officers at the Madhupatna Police Station registered the complaint and began a preliminary inquiry. The investigating officers plan to summon the laboratory technicians who tested the blood sample. Police will also question the administrative head of the Choualiaganj UCHC. The investigation will examine whether the laboratory equipment malfunctioned or whether the staff made errors during sample labeling and testing.
Urban Community Health Centers operate under the public healthcare system to provide primary medical care and diagnostic services to city residents. Accurate laboratory testing remains essential for doctors to diagnose illnesses and prescribe correct treatments. An incorrect diagnostic report can lead to unnecessary medical interventions or delay proper healthcare. Healthcare authorities regularly review laboratory calibration and staff procedures when patients report diagnostic errors.
