CHAMPUA: (Report- Kartik Behera): Continuous rainfall caused a mud house to collapse in Kendughutu Sahi of Gambharia village. The village falls under the Badanai Gram Panchayat in the Champua block of Keonjhar district. A low-pressure weather system brought persistent rainfall across the region over several days. Manamohan Mahanta and his wife, Manjushree Mahanta, lived inside the house. Both individuals evacuated the building in time and escaped without any physical injuries.
The persistent rain softened the mud walls of the structure over several days. The excessive moisture made the walls weak and unstable. While the rain continued, the couple heard cracking sounds from the structure. They noticed small pieces of soil falling from the walls. Manamohan and Manjushree quickly ran outside into the open yard. A large portion of the mud walls and the roof collapsed to the ground moments after they exited.
The collapse destroyed the residential structure completely. The heavy mud and roof materials crushed the household items inside the rooms. The family lost their furniture, utensils, clothing, and stored food grains. The incident left the couple without shelter. Manamohan earns daily wages and has limited income. He does not have enough money to clear the debris and rebuild the house on his own. The couple currently stays in a temporary space near the site.
Following the incident, local villagers gathered at the location to assist the family. Community members asked block administrative officers to inspect the damage directly. They asked the local revenue inspector to prepare a formal damage assessment report. The residents also urged the district administration to provide emergency relief supplies to the family. They requested temporary polythene sheets, basic food supplies, and financial aid through government rural housing schemes. Panchayat representatives stated that they will forward the request to the Block Development Officer for financial compensation.
