Daringbadi, (Report - Mathew Muthamajhi): A government primary school in Nilakilu village remained completely closed during normal working hours on Thursday. The village is located in Tajungia panchayat within the Daringbadi block of Kandhamal district. The state government had not scheduled any official public holiday for the day. However, the school did not conduct classes, and students had to return home.
No Teachers, No Class: Remote Kandhamal Govt School Shuts on Working Day

The Nilakilu Government Primary School currently functions with only two teachers. On Thursday, neither teacher attended the school to teach the students. The Headmaster traveled to Brahmanigaon High School to participate in a mandatory Booth Level Officer (BLO) training program. At the same time, the Assistant Teacher became ill and submitted a medical leave notice to the Headmaster. Because the education department did not assign any substitute teachers to the school, the administration could not keep the classrooms open.
Local community members pointed out that the school regularly faces serious infrastructure problems. The school building remains in a broken physical condition and lacks essential basic facilities. In addition to the structural defects, the remote location creates logistical problems for both teachers and students. Nilakilu village lacks a paved motorable road, so residents and children must walk along a narrow footpath to reach the school grounds.
The Block Education Officer (BEO) of Daringbadi confirmed the incident. The official verified that one teacher attended assigned government training while the second teacher took leave due to sudden illness.
Local residents have asked the district education department to take immediate corrective measures. They demanded that the administration assign additional teachers to remote village schools so that single training sessions or medical emergencies do not disrupt regular classes. The community also urged authorities to repair the school building and improve road access to ensure uninterrupted primary education for rural children.
