CBI Traces Leak to NTA Insider; Government Announces Complete Shift to Computer-Based Format Next Year
By Durga Prasad Mallick
In an unprecedented blow to millions of medical aspirants across the country, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has officially cancelled the NEET-UG 2026 examination conducted on May 3. The decision follows damning evidence confirming that the highly competitive medical entrance question paper was compromised and widely leaked prior to the exam.
The move has thrown the futures of approximately 22.8 lakh registered students into absolute uncertainty, triggering widespread protests by student bodies and parents nationwide.
Upon forensic evaluation, investigators found that 180 questions in the circulated PDF were precisely identical to the actual exam paper, with the order of questions and multiple-choice options matching perfectly. The education mafia reportedly sold these papers to desperate candidates at prices ranging from ₹2 lakh to upwards of ₹25 lakh depending on the timing of access. What was masked as an "unusually accurate guess paper" distributed to coaching hubs in Sikar, Nashik, and across states like Bihar and Maharashtra, was a full-blown systemic breach.
As the CBI continues its nationwide raids spanning 14 locations, medical college admission calendars across India face massive delays, leaving millions of meritorious students praying for a fair trial on June 21.

The Modus Operandi: "Guess Papers" on Telegram and WhatsApp
The scandal unfolded after the Rajasthan Police’s Special Operations Group (SOG) and central agencies traced a massive digital footprint of the leaked content. According to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which took over the probe on Tuesday, a PDF containing 500 to 600 questions was circulated on encrypted platforms like Telegram and WhatsApp as early as April 29—four days before the nationwide pen-and-paper exam.Upon forensic evaluation, investigators found that 180 questions in the circulated PDF were precisely identical to the actual exam paper, with the order of questions and multiple-choice options matching perfectly. The education mafia reportedly sold these papers to desperate candidates at prices ranging from ₹2 lakh to upwards of ₹25 lakh depending on the timing of access. Inside Job Suspected as CBI Nabs Five
In a startling development presented before a Delhi court, the CBI revealed that the leak traces back to a source inside the National Testing Agency (NTA) itself. A special CBI court has granted seven-day custody of five key accused—including mastermind operatives from Nashik, Gurugram, and Jaipur—to unearth the larger conspiracy."Even if a single question matches our question paper, our commitment to zero tolerance and zero error is violated. We take full responsibility for it," stated NTA Director General Abhishek Singh, acknowledging that the sanctity of the examination had been entirely compromised.
Government Damage Control: Re-Exam and Policy Overhaul
Faced with severe opposition backlash and public outrage, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan stepped forward on Friday to announce radical countermeasures:- Official Re-Exam Date: A fresh NEET-UG 2026 test will be conducted on June 21, 2026.
- Financial Relief: Candidates will not need to re-register or pay any fresh examination fees; the previous application details and center preferences will be automatically carried forward.
- A Shift to Digital: Acknowledging that the physical Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) sheets and printing chains are the "root of the leak," Minister Pradhan announced that NEET will completely transition to a computer-based format starting next year.
