Poverty often forces people to leave their homes and loved ones. Many individuals cross borders just to feed their families. But sometimes, this desperate search for a better life ends in tragedy. The recent death of A. Rameya, a young man from the Ganjam district of Odisha, highlights this harsh reality. He lost his life in a foreign conflict, far away from home. His death shocks not just his family, but our entire society. It raises serious questions about the safety of our migrant workers and the lack of local jobs.
Fatal Search for Work: Why We Must Protect Migrant Workers

Rameya lived in Madhabandha village in the Chikiti block. Last March, he traveled to Russia with many hopes. He wanted to earn a decent income and support his family. He started working for a company in Moscow. He only wanted to build a secure future. He never imagined that his search for work would pull him into a dangerous war zone. His sudden death in a drone strike is a profound tragedy. It shows how helpless and unsafe workers from developing regions become when they travel abroad for employment.
Ganjam district sends thousands of young men out every year to find work. They travel across India and to other countries. Unfortunately, these workers often end up in very vulnerable situations. This current event clearly shows how Indian workers become unintended victims in foreign conflicts. They face immense risks just to earn a basic living. We cannot ignore their unsafe conditions anymore.
Right now, the most urgent task is to bring Rameya’s body back to his native village. The Ganjam District Collector, V. Keerthi Vasan, took quick action after hearing the news. We welcome his swift response. Officials in New Delhi are now working with the Indian Embassy in Russia. The central and state governments must give this matter their full attention. They must clear all administrative hurdles quickly. The heartbroken family only wants to see their son one last time. Fast and sincere action from the government will give them some comfort during this deeply painful time.
This sad event serves as a strong warning for our economic and social systems. The state government must take bold steps. It must create good job opportunities right here in our local towns and villages. If young people find jobs at home, they will not risk their lives abroad. Furthermore, the government must register all workers who go outside the country. It must also strictly ban the employment of our citizens in active war zones.
The government cannot simply bring the body back, offer financial help, and forget the issue. Leaders must make sure no other young person dies in a foreign war just because they needed a job to survive. Protecting our youth and providing local work is the only true way to honor A. Rameya.
