Bhubaneswar: In a significant move, the Leader of Opposition, Naveen Patnaik, has announced a major decision regarding his income. He has decided to donate the increased amount of his salary and allowances to the poor. He wants this money to support the development and welfare of the underprivileged people in the state. This announcement comes amidst ongoing discussions across the state regarding the salary hike for Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) and Ministers. 
Naveen Patnaik formally communicated this decision to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. He wrote a letter to the Chief Minister to inform him of his intent. The former Chief Minister also shared this information publicly through a post on the social media platform 'X' (formerly Twitter). His post has added a new dimension to the current debate over the pay rise for politicians.
In his statement, Naveen expressed his deep gratitude to the people of Odisha. He highlighted his long journey in public service. He wrote that he has received immense love, affection, and support from the citizens of Odisha for more than 25 years. He also acknowledged the lasting respect the people hold for his late father, the legendary Biju Patnaik. He feels deeply indebted to the people for this unwavering support.

He recalled a previous decision where his family donated their ancestral property, 'Anand Bhavan,' located in Cuttack, to the state. He drew a parallel between that past donation and his current decision. Just as the family gave away their property for the greater good, he now wishes to give away his salary increment.
He clarified that he does not want to keep the extra money that comes with the new salary structure for the Leader of Opposition. Instead, he requested the government to utilize this specific portion of his funds for the benefit of the poor people of Odisha.
