Daspalla: (Report - Subash Chandra Barik): The much-anticipated MP Sports Festival, a vibrant celebration of youth power spanning the Gania, Nuagaon, and Daspalla blocks of the Daspalla Assembly Constituency, successfully concluded on Saturday at the Gandhi Maidan in Daspalla. This event showcased the rich sporting talent within the rural areas.

​A Grand Closing Ceremony

​The day's events began with great fanfare. Early in the morning, a torch rally started from the revered Shri Mahavir Temple, the beloved deity of Daspalla. The rally then proceeded to the Gandhi Maidan, where organizers hoisted the sports flag, marking the official start of the closing ceremony.

​Following the flag hoisting, a public meeting took place. Guests first lit a traditional lamp before an image of Lord Jagannath to begin the program. Young female students then performed a welcome song, setting an auspicious and inspiring tone for the event.

​Inspiring the Next Generation of Athletes

​The sports festival’s President, Soumya Ranjan Rath, presided over the general meeting. Sukanta Kumar Panigrahi, the local Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) from the Central Government, attended as the Chief Guest.

​Other dignitaries present included Jyotiranjan Samantaray, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO); Smrutiranjan Satpathy, Tehsildar; Abinash Mohanty, Executive Officer of the Notified Area Council; Binapani Pani, Councillor (Ward 4); and the District Sports Officer. Popular film actor Omkar and an Ollywood singer also joined the celebration.
​Addressing the gathering, the guests emphasized that the festival's main objective is to inspire rural sporting talent and help these athletes reach the international level. They stressed the importance of providing a strong platform for grassroots players.

​Competitions and Awards

​The festival featured competitions in a diverse range of sports, highlighting both popular and traditional games. Athletes competed fiercely in Chess, Kho-Kho, Kabaddi, Football, Cricket, and Badminton.
​At the close of the event, organisers honored the winners from all three participating blocks—Gania, Nuagaon, and Daspalla—with well-deserved prizes. Police administration personnel, sports enthusiasts, and local intellectuals were present in large numbers, demonstrating the community's strong support for the festival. The successful conclusion of the MP Sports Festival reinforces the commitment to nurturing athletic talent in the region.
