Bhubaneswar: The state of Odisha is set to develop its second Regional Plant Resource Centre (RPRC) in Sanghagara, Keonjhar district, a project personally championed by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. This ambitious botanical garden, slated for completion by 2027, will be established over approximately 134 acres of land.
Odisha's Second Botanical Garden to Feature Orchids & Cacti in Keonjhar

The decision was solidified during a high-level review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Majhi at the Lok Seva Bhavan. The meeting, which included officials from the Forest, Environment, and Climate Change Department and the Kendujhar district administration, focused on the comprehensive development plan for the centre.
A Hub for Biodiversity and Eco-Tourism
Designed as a multifaceted space, the centre will be dedicated to biodiversity conservation, community engagement, eco-tourism, and research and education. It aims to offer visitors a rich experience of nature through thematic gardens and natural trails.
A key highlight of the facility will be its extensive collection of flora native to Odisha. The centre will feature a dedicated orchid conservation and display section, showcasing various species found across the state. Additionally, it will house themed gardens including a rose garden, a bamboo grove, a cactus collection, and sections for wild edible fruits and medicinal plants.
Infrastructure and Development Plans
To ensure the project blends with the local environment, the construction will prioritize the use of indigenous stone and wood for all structures and furnishings. The plans also include developing a flower market and a dedicated children’s play area to enhance visitor experience.
Chief Minister Majhi has directed officials to ensure the centre remains open to tourists and the public throughout the year, positioning it as a special tourism destination. He also emphasized the importance of keeping the Machhakandana River, which flows through the project area, perennially healthy and full.
Addressing the practical challenge of elephant menace in the area, the Chief Minister advised the district administration to construct deep trenches as a preventive measure to minimize human-elephant conflict.
Senior officials, including Chief Secretary Shri Manoj Ahuja, Additional Chief Secretary of the Forest Department Satyabrat Sahu, and Kendujhar District Collector Vishal Singh, attended the meeting to discuss the timely execution of this visionary project.
