Bhubaneswar: The government of Odisha is taking a giant leap into the future of urban living. It has officially approved an ambitious plan to construct a brand-new, futuristic city on the outskirts of its capital, Bhubaneswar. This groundbreaking initiative, developed in partnership with Singapore, promises to transform the region's landscape and establish eastern India as a major center for modern development.
State officials confirm the project will cover a massive area of 800 acres. The state cabinet has committed a significant investment of Rs 8,179 crore to bring this vision to life. This new city aims to do much more than just add buildings; it intends to reposition Odisha as a leading urban hub for business, sports, and sustainable living.
The inspiration for this project comes from the successful double-city model seen in Gujarat. However, Odisha is tailoring the concept to its own unique needs by leveraging Singapore's world-renowned expertise in urban planning and smart city design. The two governments solidified this exciting collaboration by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during the recent visit of the Singaporean President to India.
The Odisha Urban Development Minister, Krushna Chandra Mahapatra, outlined the ambitious vision for the new area. He stated that the city will seamlessly blend high-rise skyscrapers, top-tier sports facilities, expansive green zones, and powerful commercial districts. A key focus will be on inclusivity and community growth through dedicated human resource development programs, ensuring the city benefits all its future residents.
A Detailed Project Report (DPR), prepared at a cost of Rs 16.23 lakh, has already received full cabinet approval. This report lays the foundation for what will become a magnet for domestic and international companies. The project is expected to generate a wealth of new job opportunities and drive economic growth across multiple sectors, including information technology (IT), manufacturing, and services.
This new city is a central pillar in Odisha's broader roadmap to achieve developed status by the year 2036. This year is particularly significant as it marks the centenary of the state's formation. By embracing global partnerships and committing to forward-thinking infrastructure, Odisha hopes to set a new benchmark for sustainable and smart urban growth in India. The Bhubaneswar New City Project is not just about construction; it is about building a brighter, more prosperous future for the entire region.
