DASAPALLA: (Report- Ratnakar Hota): Work on the ambitious Brutang Lift Irrigation Project in the Takara Panchayat of Dasapalla block is scheduled to commence very soon. This significant initiative is designed to provide a reliable water source for irrigating vast agricultural lands across Nayagarh and parts of Khordha district, addressing long-standing water scarcity issues that have hampered farming activities for years.
Major Lift Irrigation Project Brutang Set to Begin in Nayagarh's Daspalla, Aiming to Transform Agriculture

The project has been a major focus for local farmers and residents, who have eagerly awaited its start to secure their agricultural livelihoods. The primary goal of the project is to spur the development of the farming sector and the farmers themselves, ensuring increased agricultural productivity and economic growth in the region.
Administrative preparations are currently in full swing to finalize the project's detailed blueprint. Officials from the concerned department reported that soil samples from the proposed dam and spillway construction sites are being collected for rigorous testing. The initial phase of creating a comprehensive design for the project is already underway.
A substantial financial allocation of ₹1,658.72 crore has been earmarked for the project in the 2023 fiscal year, underscoring the government's commitment. The project recently cleared critical regulatory hurdles, having received Stage-II forest clearance from the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in July of last year. The crucial environmental clearance was officially stamped (moher) in February this year, greenlighting the project's progression.
Mr. Prakash Pradhan, the Executive Engineer of the Lift Irrigation Project, stated that with these approvals in place, the foundation stone-laying ceremony is now targeted for December of this year. However, he highlighted a significant challenge: a shortage of necessary staff to oversee the project's advancement efficiently.
In a key development to accelerate the process, the district administration has appointed Ms. Smrutiranjan Satpathy, the Dasapalla Tahsildar, as the Land Acquisition Officer specifically for this project. Her appointment is expected to fast-track the crucial process of land acquisition for the project site, which is slated to begin imminently.
Simultaneously, technical teams are preparing a complete data-based report on water conservation and withdrawal from reservoirs. This vital report will be submitted to the Central Water Commission for final review and approval.
Upon completion, the Brutang Lift Irrigation Project is poised to transform agriculture in the region. It aims to provide irrigation facilities to approximately 233,300 hectares of farmland across the blocks of Dasapalla, Khandapada, Nuagaon, and Odagaon in Nayagarh district.
The project infrastructure will span a total of 3,552 hectares. This area includes 19,624 hectares of forest land, 790.88 hectares of private land, and 1,237.01 hectares of government land. The reservoir is expected to submerge approximately 2,121.41 hectares. Given the project's scale and importance, senior officials have been conducting frequent site inspections to monitor preparatory work and ensure a smooth commencement.
This irrigation project represents a beacon of hope for thousands of farmers, promising to mitigate water shortages and usher in a new era of agricultural prosperity in the district.
