Odisha Government Implements Comprehensive Safety Guidelines for Schools

Key Directives for District Officers:

  • Strengthen Workplace Protections: DEOs must ensure full compliance with workplace safety laws for women, specifically referencing national legislation safeguarding female employees.
  • Review Complaint Systems: DEOs must verify the establishment and proper functioning of Internal Complaints Committees (ICCs) in all applicable institutions to address concerns confidentially.
  • Build Secure Environments: Schools are directed to create physically, mentally, and emotionally safe spaces for every student.
  • Promote Respect & Equality: The 'BARNALI' (Gender Equity Initiative) program must be actively integrated. This curriculum fosters positive attitudes and respectful behavior among students, teachers, and parents.
  • Mandatory Curriculum Inclusion: All primary and secondary schools must incorporate the BARNALI program into their Social Studies syllabus without exception.
  • Display Emergency Contacts: DEOs must ensure these critical helpline numbers are prominently visible in all schools, offices, and student residences:
  • Women's Support Line: 181
  • Child Assistance Line:1098
  • Emergency Police Services (ERSS): 112
  • Student Support Helpline: 1800 345 6722

Focus on Well-being

Official communications emphasize that protecting female staff and ensuring child safety are paramount. The guidelines highlight that student welfare encompasses physical security, mental health, and positive social development. Schools are identified as essential in providing this holistic safety.
The BARNALI initiative is central to this effort. Embedding lessons on mutual respect and equity within Social Studies aims to shape positive behaviors early. The program engages students, teachers, and parents collectively.
