Bhubaneswar: Odisha held its 5th state-level NCORD (Narco Coordination Centre) meeting today at Lok Seva Bhawan to boost efforts against illegal drug trafficking and abuse.

The meeting, led by Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, brought together top officials from police, excise, central agencies, and other departments to review progress and plan stronger actions.  
Key attendees included Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Satyabrata Sahu, DGP Y.B. Khurania, NCB Deputy Director Hitesh Godara, and Excise Commissioner Guha Poonam Tapas Kumar. Representatives from the Coast Guard, Navy, Railways, Postal Service, and district administrations also joined, with some participating online.  
The meeting checked the status of decisions made in the last NCORD meeting (April 24, 2024) and discussed drug seizures, enforcement actions, and coordination with central agencies like the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).  

Crackdown on Drugs 

  • In 2024–25, authorities destroyed 27,721 acres of illegal cannabis crops—a huge jump from 10,320 acres the previous year. Satellite images and intelligence helped locate these plantations.  
  • Police seized 1,37,761 kg of cannabis, 37 kg of heroin, and other drugs across the state in 2024.  
  • Over 62,000 people have taken anti-drug pledges on the e-Govardhan portal as part of the national "Drug-Free India" campaign. Colleges have been asked to organize pledge drives for students.  

Next Steps 

  • New NDPS courts will be set up in Odisha to speed up drug-related cases.  
  • The DGP highlighted better coordination between police and excise officials and shared plans for 2025–26.  
  • The Chief Secretary stressed awareness programs, alternative crops for farmers, and livelihood support in areas affected by illegal cannabis farming.  
  • District officials were told to hold regular reviews and ensure strict action against drug activities.  
The National Narcotics Helpline (1933) and Manas Portal remain active for reporting drug-related issues. The meeting ended with a call for all departments to work together to eliminate drug abuse and trafficking in Odisha.
