Home Minister Amit Shah Urges Odisha Government to Expedite Implementation of New Criminal Laws

Bhubaneswar: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has called upon the Odisha government to prioritise the implementation of the newly introduced criminal laws, ensuring a more efficient and modern justice system. The appeal comes as part of the central government’s push to overhaul outdated legal frameworks and enhance public safety across states.

Key Reforms in Focus

The new criminal laws, recently passed by Parliament, aim to replace archaic British-era statutes with contemporary legal provisions. Key highlights include:
  • Faster Justice Delivery: Stricter timelines for investigations and trials to reduce pendency.
  • Victim-Centric Approach: Enhanced rights and protections for victims, including mandatory victim compensation.
  • Digital Integration: Use of technology for evidence recording, e-filing, and virtual court proceedings.
  • Stricter Punishments: Harsher penalties for crimes against women, children, and national security.

Shah’s Appeal to Odisha

During a high-level review meeting, Amit Shah stressed the need for Odisha to align its law enforcement and judicial mechanisms with the new laws. He highlighted that timely implementation would ensure seamless coordination between state and central agencies, improving overall governance.
"The new criminal laws are designed to deliver justice swiftly and transparently. Odisha must adopt these reforms at the earliest to benefit its citizens," Shah stated.

Odisha Government’s Response

While the state government has acknowledged the importance of the reforms, officials indicated that logistical and training challenges need addressing before full-scale execution. A senior state representative assured that necessary steps, including police training and public awareness campaigns, are underway.

Public and Legal Experts’ Reactions

Legal experts in Odisha have welcomed the reforms but caution that proper infrastructure and stakeholder training are crucial for success. Meanwhile, citizens express hope that the updated laws will curb crime and reduce delays in court cases.
The Odisha government is expected to submit a detailed action plan to the Centre within the next month, outlining its roadmap for adopting the new legal framework.
As India transitions to a more progressive criminal justice system, Odisha’s prompt implementation of these laws will be pivotal in ensuring justice, security, and governance efficiency for its residents.
