GSI Discovers Lithium Deposits in Odisha’s Nayagarh, AI and Drones Aid Exploration

Bhubaneswar: The Geological Survey of India (GSI) has made a significant breakthrough by discovering lithium deposits in Odisha’s Nayagarh district. This finding, facilitated through cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and drone-based exploration, marks a crucial step in India’s push for self-reliance in critical minerals.

Lithium Discovery to Boost India’s EV and Renewable Energy Sectors

Lithium, a key component in manufacturing batteries for electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energy storage, is considered a strategic mineral. The discovery in Nayagarh could significantly contribute to India’s ambitious goals in clean energy and reduce dependence on lithium imports.
Speaking at the GSI Board meeting in Konark, Pankaj Kumar, Deputy Director of the GSI’s State Unit, confirmed that an exploratory pilot project was undertaken using advanced technologies like drones and AI.
“The findings indicate the presence of lithium beneath the soil in Nayagarh, and further studies are underway to assess the extent and commercial viability of the deposits,” he stated.

Government’s Focus on Critical Minerals Exploration

VL Kantha Rao, Secretary of the Ministry of Mines, highlighted the government’s aggressive approach toward identifying and tapping into critical mineral reserves across India.
“The Central government has prioritised lithium, copper, and other strategic minerals. Odisha, with its mineral-rich landscape, remains a focal point for these surveys,” he said.
He further added that GSI has intensified its exploration activities in multiple regions of Odisha, leveraging state-of-the-art technologies to enhance efficiency and precision in mineral detection.
“AI-driven analysis and drone-based surveys have allowed us to map subsurface mineral deposits more accurately,” Rao emphasized.

Strategic Implications of the Lithium Discovery

India currently relies on imports for lithium, primarily from countries like Australia, Chile, and Argentina. The discovery in Nayagarh could reduce this dependency, strengthening India's position in the global EV battery and renewable energy supply chains.
Industry experts believe that if the lithium reserves in Nayagarh prove commercially viable, it could pave the way for establishing battery manufacturing plants, attracting foreign investments, and fostering indigenous EV production.

National Mines Ministers’ Conference to Discuss Future Roadmap

The discovery comes ahead of the 3rd National Mines Ministers’ Conference, scheduled for January 20-21, 2025, in Konark, jointly organized by the Union Ministry of Mines and the Government of Odisha. The conference will see policymakers, industry leaders, and geologists discuss strategies for sustainable mining and exploration of critical minerals, including lithium

What’s Next?

While the initial findings are promising, the next steps involve detailed geological assessments, environmental evaluations, and potential partnerships with the private sector for commercial extraction. Experts believe that with the right policies and investments, Odisha could emerge as a key player in India’s mineral economy.
With technological advancements and proactive government support, the Nayagarh lithium discovery might just be the beginning of a new era in India’s mineral exploration and green energy revolution.
