Director Ji Mohan on Bad Girl: ‘Try With Your Own Caste’ – Accuses Vetrimaaran and Anurag Kashyap of Misrepresenting Brahmins

Varsha Bharath’s Bad Girl, featuring Anjali Shivaram, is gearing up for its world premiere at the Rotterdam International Film Festival. The film has been presented by Vetrimaaran and Anurag Kashyap and will compete in the Tiger Competition. However, director Ji Mohan has accused the film of misrepresenting Brahmins and has specifically called out Anurag Kashyap.
The teaser of Bad Girl was launched on Sunday at an event in Chennai. It features Anjali as Ramya, a character who always yearns for love but feels shy about intimacy when she finds a partner. According to the IFFR website, the film’s description states, "From high school and college to the broader world, Ramya's entire journey of seeking love is hindered by social norms, strict parents, unsuitable relationships, and her own inner chaos—all depicted through Varsha Bharath's sharp and impactful comedy."

Ji Mohan criticized the film on X (formerly Twitter), stating, "Portraying a Brahmin girl’s personal life is always a bold and refreshing subject for this group. What else can be expected from Vetrimaaran, Anurag Kashyap & Co.? Insulting Brahmin parents is neither new nor trendy... Try with your own caste first and showcase this to your family before releasing it publicly." Ji Mohan has previously directed films like Draupathi and Bakasuran.
While making this statement, Ji Mohan also reshared director Pa Ranjith’s review, which read, "I watched #BadGirl and I am deeply moved. This is truly a bold and refreshing film! Director #Vetrimaaran deserves immense appreciation for supporting such a daring narrative. The film powerfully portrays women's struggles and societal expectations through a unique new-wave cinematic approach. Congratulations, #Varsha!"
